Qatar Smart (TASMU) Program Hosts a German Trade Delegation

Doha, Qatar The Smart Qatar (TASMU) Program, in partnership with the German Embassy, hosted a trade delegation which included representatives from 20 German businesses. Lead by Dr. Georg Melanin, an official from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the German delegation included Andreas Berg, German Deputy Ambassador to Qatar; Kathrin Lemke, Representative of the German Industry and Commerce Office in Qatar; Dr. Linda von Delhaes-Guenther, Managing Director of AHP International; in addition to representatives from leading German businesses in the software development, cybersecurity, information management, engineering technologies, radar manufacturing, biosensors, motion sensors, armored vehicle design, and smart firefighting systems sectors. The German delegation was briefed on the initiatives and achievements of the TASMU program, a flagship initiative under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The session also covered the unique investment opportunities available as part of the TASMU program. The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the field of communications and information technology. The recently launched TASMU platform, which is a key tool for developing smart and innovative solutions, was also presented. The platform regulates and integrates all services across TASMU’s five priority sectors: healthcare, environment, transport, logistics, and sports. It provides the necessary data for innovators to develop applications, or test and market their smart solutions. It further serves as a comprehensive library for users, enabling them to find the applications or technologies they need through a one-stop shop approach. Commenting on the visit, Her Excellency Reem Al-Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary for Digital Society Development Sector at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, said: "We are pleased to host the German delegation and discuss opportunities for cooperation between organizations in Qatar and Germany. We always strive to enhance cooperation and exchange experiences with various countries, while building strong relationships and long-term partnerships with leading international companies from various sectors. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for residents in Qatar and accelerate our path towards sustainable economic diversification by developing smart solutions that contribute to achieving Qatar National Vision 2030.” She added: "We look forward to benefiting from all global and local expertise to help build a smart Qatar and transform the country into a regional hub for information technology and the development of advanced technologies. We are optimistic about the results of the meeting with the German delegation, and we look forward to further cooperation in the near future." The German delegation’s visit is part of the efforts led by TASMU Digital Valley (TDV), one of the main initiatives under the Smart Qatar Program. TDV is an advanced and innovative platform that links and integrates various sectors and connects entrepreneurs, startups, investors, academics, and international companies. It aims to enhance cooperation with multinational companies and advanced technology firms to provide smart solutions that contribute to the development of TASMU’s priority sectors. TASMU is currently developing more than 100 smart solutions that help address major challenges on a national level. Three smart solutions were already launched in 2020 and 2021 in the healthcare and environment sectors, and the program recently launched the third batch of tenders for smart solutions that include the development of seven new solutions. The German delegation was also briefed by Qatar’s National Cybersecurity Agency on the country’s cybersecurity efforts. The presentation covered the key elements from the National Cybersecurity Strategy and the efforts undertaken by various sectors in the country to elevate Qatar’s cybersecurity systems. The session also highlighted the Qatar Computer Emergency Response Team (Q-CERT), which was launched in 2006, and the initiatives they launched to share technical expertise and build national capacity. The discussion also covered Q-CERT’s participation in various international organizations in an effort to build partnerships and sustain best practices in cybersecurity and data privacy. Representatives from the National Cybersecurity Agency highlighted the series of National Cyber Drills (The STAR-X series) which is an annual exercise that was held for eight years in a row with participation from more than 80 national entities and 500 participants. This has contributed to the identification of different sector capabilities, to test and develop their readiness to respond to cyber-attacks. The National Cybersecurity Agency was established in accordance with the Amiri Decision No. 01 of 2021, as a step towards uniting the various efforts of all government entities in this area.

Digital Incubation Center Launches IdeaCamp5

Doha – QatarThe Digital Incubation Center (DIC) announced that the fifth edition of IdeaCamp has begun receiving applications to qualify for winning an incubation opportunity at the DIC.This year's edition of the camp targets tech entrepreneurs, developers and programmers with innovative tech ideas that serve the sectors of the Smart Qatar (TASMU): healthcare, transportation, environment, logistics and sports.IdeaCamp welcomes any tech idea; however, the priority is given to entrepreneurs who utilize the following technology areas: advanced analytics, IoT, Blockchain, robots, drones, AR/VR, mobile solutions, data visualization and AI.Online applications to join IdeaCamp will be received at https://forms.gle/jSKDwfTGiAQcnxUq6 until this Nov. 15. After being received, all applications are screened and assessed, and owners of the accepted applications are informed.The IdeaCamp's 12 workshops, in addition to individual mentorship sessions for entrepreneurs, will be held over six weeks, starting from Nov. 19, during which entrepreneurs will receive the mentoring and support of DIC's team as well as technology experts. Entrepreneurs will also learn strategies for developing their businesses, ways to successfully build prototypes, conduct a feasibility study, and be trained in pitching their ideas.At the end of the IdeaCamp5, DIC will select the best ideas to compete on the Pitching Day before a specialized jury. The winning startups will be incubated for two years, be provided with free office space, be mentored by DIC's team and its network of partners and be connected to a vast network of investors and industry experts inside and outside of Qatar.The DIC designed the IdeaCamp to help build and develop a leading generation of tech entrepreneurs in Qatar, providing them with the skills that will enable them to turn their creative ideas into reality to serve Qatar's digital economy. The DIC is pivotal in motivating entrepreneurs to harness emerging technologies to provide innovative solutions. For over a decade since its establishment, DIC has taken the initiative to conclude strategic partnerships that would serve entrepreneurs in their early stages of starting or developing their digital solutions.

Kamel Elwazir, on the sidelines of the Arab transport ministers’ meeting.The two ministers discussed aspects of cooperation in the fields of transportation and civil aviation and ways of further enhancing them, in addition to mutually supporting the nominations of the State of Qatar and the Arab Republic of Egypt for the membership of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is the Executive Organ of IMO, for the period 2022-2023. They also discussed several topics that interest the two brotherly countries. During the meeting, Minister Al-Sulaiti affirmed Qatar’s commitment to backing the application by Egypt to host the IMO Regional Office for Arab States in accordance with the decision issued by the Council of Arab Transport Ministers in 2019.

Qatar Signs Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement with EU

Luxemburg - Doha The State of Qatar today signed the Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement with the European Union, ushering in a new chapter of cooperation in the field of air transportation between Qatar and EU countries. The new Agreement replaces already-signed bilateral agreements but will not strike out the previous rights granted to the State of Qatar and the EU Member States. The Agreement was signed in Luxemburg by Qatar’s Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia HE Anže Logar, whose country is the current President of the Council of the EU, and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission HE Josep Borrell. Per the Agreement, the companies concerned from all intended countries will enjoy an easy and free access to markets with less restrictions, aiming to significantly boost the opportunities of competition which all parties were keen they shall be fair and shall ensure the application of the principles of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) through “allowing fair and equal opportunities for all parties.” The pact will also allow Qatar’s national carrier to enter European markets easily (without restrictions) and expand its network in EU countries with the possibility of linking it to the rest of networks without limits to payloads or number of flights, thus reflecting positively on the national carrier’s profitability. On this occasion, HE Minister Al-Sulaiti said that the Agreement will undoubtedly be beneficial to all its parties and it is the first of its kind in the Gulf Region, for transportation rights (third and fourth freedoms). He added that the Agreement will allow a phased progressive liberalization over four years after which markets will have become fully liberalized where the concerned companies will be able to exhibit the capacity that is appropriate for their needs, thus allowing Qatar’s national carrier to operate in some key European markets such as France, Germany, Spain and others. HE Minister said they were so glad for signing the Agreement, which had seen serious negotiations from both parties to render it successful and that reflects the sincere intention for developing the bilateral ties between Qatar and all EU countries to accelerate development and ensure an effective contribution to strengthening bilateral economic relations. The Minister said that the Agreement is a testimony to Qatar’s notable profile in air transportation and that the national carrier has such an active role around the world. The Minister thanked all parties that did contribute to the success of the Agreement, particularly the negotiating teams representing the Agreement and Qatar who successfully reached the final version for signing the pact, wishing Qatar-EU bilateral relations more success and progress.
