Introductory Overview of the Qatar Electric Bus Transition Plan

Guided by Qatar National Vision 2030, the Ministry of Transport is leading the way in building a sustainable and envi-ronmentally friendly transport system for the nation.

Central to this vision is the transition to cleaner fuels and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles across both public and private sectors, reflecting Qatar’s strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the modern image of its transportation network.

A key priority within this plan is the gradual conversion of the school bus fleet from traditional diesel to electric, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment for students and the wider community.

This effort is part of the broader public bus electrification plan, which stands as a testament to Qatar’s dedication to sustainable mobility and the core pillars of the National Vision—environmental stewardship, economic progress, and social development.

The journey began in 2018 with pilot trials of electric buses, leading to a major milestone in 2022 when 25% of the public bus fleet was electrified for the FIFA World Cup, making Qatar the first country in the region to have introduced electric mass transit for such a global event.

Since then, Qatar has rapidly expanded its electric fleet. By mid-2025, 74% of public buses—totaling 787 vehicles—will have become electric, supported by five advanced depots and nine operational stations.

This transition has already resulted in a reduction of more than 45 million kilograms of carbon emissions and noticeable improvements in air quality by the end of 2024. The launch of the region’s first electric bus assembly plant will further strengthen local capabilities and support regional needs.

By 2030, MOT aims for all public and school buses to become fully electric, replacing all diesel vehicles.

Through strategic investments and integrated infrastructure, Qatar is reinforcing its position as a regional leader in clean, innovative public transportation, fully aligned with its national sustainability goals.
