Minister Meets with ICAO Council President

Doha – Qatar Minister of Transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti met here today with President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council HE Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano. The two officials reviewed Qatar-ICAO civil aviation relations and means of further enhancing them. They also discussed ways to contribute to environment protection issues and carbon emissions reduction R&D. The ICAO Regional Director, Middle East Office, HE Eng. Mohamed Farea participated in the meeting. Following the meeting, Mr. Sciacchitano and Mr. Farea visited the Hamad International Airport Tower building and the Qatar Air Traffic Control and their service facilities and were briefed on some of the sophisticated operational technologies in use. They also visited the Qatar Science and Technology Park at Qatar Foundation.    Mr. Sciacchitano praised the major development of Qatar’s civil aviation sector and thanked the efforts Qatar had done during the coronavirus pandemic, its effective contribution to transportation industry and continued backing of the ICAO.

CAA Wraps Up Air Traffic Flow Management Course with ICAO

Doha – Qatar Sponsored by the Ministry of Transport, the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) today wrapped up an Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) training course it organized in cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Held on two phases from March 27 to March 30, the course comes in preparation for the operational intensity during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. In addition to Qatar, representatives from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Sudan, participated in the course. Featuring global experts, the course aims to effectively contribute to managing the air traffic flow between airspaces of the countries of the region to secure smooth and safe flights during the FIFA event. Course attendees were introduced to the advantages of the navigation systems applied by the CAA so that countries of the region can provide efficient and safe services, commensurate with a potentially high air traffic flow during the global event and in line with the set regional plan. ICAO put the training course’s agenda and topics. Using simulators, the attendees were briefed on the applied navigation system and its powerful features, in addition to sharing daily air traffic predictions with the countries concerned. Mr. Mohamed Faleh Alhajri, who is in charge of managing the CAA, said that the course comes in the context of the country’s preparation for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and within the framework of their fruitful collaboration with the ICAO and countries of the region regarding managing the air traffic flow during the coming period. He said that the aim is to provide efficient services and ensure flight safety and smooth and flexible air traffic during the FIFA championship.

Ministry Takes Part in Smart City Expo Doha 2022

Doha – Qatar The Ministry of Transport is taking part in the Smart City Expo Doha 2022 organized under the theme “Sustaining a Future of Resilience” on March 29-30 in Msheireb Downtown Doha. The Ministry is exhibiting some of its key transportation and mobility strategies and projects that embrace some of the latest innovative practices that are focused on environmental sustainability and clean technological solutions in such a way that backs the country’s transformation to a smart nation. The Ministry’s booth features the strategy of transiting to electric vehicles, which backs Qatar’s agenda for a greener future by helping in striking an economic-environmental balance in a way that ensures transportation sector’s infrastructure projects sustainability by deploying clean and alternative energy. Backing this strategy, the Ministry is collaborating with the competent entities on the Public Bus Infrastructure Program, which includes operating 8 bus stations and 4 depots equipped with electric vehicle charging devices, in addition to supplying and installing over 600 charging devices across the country. It also features the development of 2700 bus stops distributed in various areas in and outside of the city of Doha. It also includes operating Park & Ride parking service near metro stations. The booth also showcases the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which combines electrical and mechanical systems to link Lusail and Al Bayt Stadium as a first stage to serve the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 transportation and mobility operations. BRT system is set to expand to cover other areas that the metro does not. The Ministry is also highlighting its studies on the autonomous vehicle (AVs) project that is initially focused on the West Bay area. The project aims to provide a highly efficient mobility system based on smart mobility technologies. The goal is to connect the most vital areas in Qatar. The Ministry is also introducing Sila - the brand that brings together the State of Qatar’s transportation modes into one network. Currently it includes the metro, bus, tram and taxi. The Ministry pays great attention to environmental sustainability and assigns high priority to minimizing the environmental impacts across all stages of all its land, maritime and air transportation projects. The Smart City Expo Doha 2022, the global platform dedicated to discussing, tackling and solving the challenges facing the cities of tomorrow. It features high-profile keynote speakers from Qatar and abroad, over 100 exhibitors and 60 speakers and experts in the field of smart cities from around the world.

Minister Meets with Qatar-EU Friendship Group Head

Doha – QatarMinister of Transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti met with Head of the Qatar-EU Friendship Group in the European Parliament and Coordinator for Transport and Tourism Committee in the European Parliament, M.E.P José Ramón Bauzá, in the Ministry’s offices today.The two officials reviewed aspects of cooperation between the State of Qatar and the EU in the field of transportation, and ways of further enhancing them.Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the European Union HE Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Malki attended the meeting.

ICAO Council Agrees on Establishment of Doha FIR in New Civil Aviation Achievement

Montreal – Doha The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council agreed to proceed with the establishment of the Doha Flight Information Region (FIR) on the basis of a phased approach as presented in the Council’s report. This came during the 10th meeting of the Council in its 225th Session held this March 11. The ICAO Council’s decision, which approved the dimensions of the Doha FIR/SRR, including revised dimensions of the Bahrain FIR/SRR, will be established in two phases; Phase One of the Doha FIR covers all the economic waters and land of the State of Qatar in addition to the international waters east of Qatar till the borders of the United Arab Emirates to an unlimited altitude. The airspace above the international waters north of the State of Qatar until the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be controlled to an altitude of 24,500 feet above sea level. The Council agreed that within two years, upon successful implementation of the first phase, the second phase shall see all areas of the Doha FIR expanded to an unlimited altitude. The Council also encouraged the States concerned to progress the proposal for amendment of the regional air navigation plans (MID ANP) and the establishment of Doha FIR based on the importance of good relations and collaboration between States to ensure seamless air services with a high level of safety and quality. Noteworthy, the State of Qatar initiated its endeavor to achieve a Doha FIR/SRR back in 2018 until the issuance of the ICAO decision C-DEC223/9 where the Doha FIR/SRR proposal was agreed in principle. On this occasion, Minister of Transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti appreciated the efforts of the ICAO Council in this regard and thanked the stance of the Member States that approved the proposal of Qatar, something that contributed to setting out a full plan for its implementation. He also expressed the State of Qatar’s appreciation of the ICAO for its efforts in service of the global civil aviation. Qatar, he added, during implementing the first phase of Doha FIR, will be able add new air routes and increase the capacity of the aircraft waiting area in the air, in addition to increasing the area of search and rescue according to the FIR’s new dimensions, thus keeping pace with the development and achievements Qatar’s civil aviation is witnessing and based on the country’s clear right to achieve its own region. He said that the civil aviation achievements in Qatar include developing the systems used in air navigation in line with latest global specifications, in addition to increasing the number of vital air routes within Qatar’s airspace in order to accommodate the requirements of large air traffic, thus demonstrating the unique performance of the services in the country. HE the Minister added that Qatar has over the past years been stressing its firm belief in the rules and fundamentals that govern the relations between countries in the civil aviation community. Qatar is also proud of being a key and active contributor and player in that UN body. He said that Qatar will spare no effort in supporting the universal civil aviation industry to create an aviation sector that is safe, secure, sustainable and efficient. Minister Al-Sulaiti also affirmed that Qatar is looking forward to cooperation between all countries for the timely implementation of the decisions made, reaffirming as well Qatar’s commitment to safety and security of the civil aviation. HE the Minister congratulated all those who work in the civil aviation sector in Qatar for the establishment of the Doha FIR/SRR, which is another accomplishment added to the record of accomplishments by the aviation system in general. He also lauded the considerable efforts done by the technical work team of Qatar and all those who worked on this effort to have this achieved.

Minister Meets with Slovenia Infrastructure Minister

Doha – QatarMinister of Transport HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti held talks with Minister of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia HE Jernej Vrtovec, in the Ministry’s offices today.The two ministers reviewed aspects of cooperation between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Slovenia in the fields of transportation, maritime navigation, ports, air transportation and civil aviation, and ways of further enhancing them.
